On Saturday May 3rd, members of the City of Hudson Fire Department spent the day at the Hudson Children’s Book Festival teaching fire prevention. The members brought with them Rescue/Engine 27-9 and the Columbia County Fire Chief’s Association Family Safety House.

Hands on tours of 27-9 and equipment demonstrations were given to the children and parents. Families took part in learning about home fire safety in the Family Safety House. While in the Family Safety House, children practiced crawling below simulated smoke and escaping out a window with the help from a couple firefighters. Members also had help from Sparky the Fire Dog, who greeted families during the Book Festival. Nearly three hundred people stopped by the fire department booth.

The Fire Department had several brochures and literature on hand educating parents on fire safety. Children received a fire safety activity book for stopping by.

A free raffle was held, offering everyone a chance to win a home safety basket, including items such as a fire extinguisher, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and emergency supplies. The basket was donated by the Columbia County Child Fatality Review Team. They provided the basket as well as Emergency Contact forms for parents to take home.
