At 4:50AM this morning Hudson Firefighters were dispatched for a chair, and possibly other items, on fire in the third floor apartment of 611 Warren Street. On arrival Car 3, Assistant Chief James Schermerhorn reported smoke showing.
First due Engine 30 stretched a 2 inch handline to the fire apartment and found an antique stuffed chair and a pair of mittens on fire in the rear of the apartment. The fire was quickly knocked down and E-30's crew was joined by the crew of Tower Ladder 32 who completed ventilation of the fire floor. The chair was removed to the street where extinguishment was finalized.
The occupant, who was home alone, stated she had earlier put out a fire in the chair and went back to bed only to be awakened by her smoke detectors. She again, and unsuccessfully, attempted to extinguish the fire before fleeing and calling 911.
This story serves as a reminder to everyone: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE WORKING SMOKE DETECTORS installed properly in your home and to ALWAYS CALL 911 no matter how small the fire may be.
There were no injuries reported and the occupant was able to return to her apartment.
Greenport Rescue Squad stood by at the scene with a Paramedic crew during the incident.
