On Friday November 3rd, members of the Hudson Fire Department deployed to Island Park, Long Island New York to assist with the recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy. Nine members of the department, including 2nd Assistant Chief James Schermerhorn, left at 07:00am on Friday with Engine 28. The crew, along side other departments from Columbia County, will be responding to alarms with the Island Park Fire Department while they recover from the effects of Hurricane Sandy.

The Island Park Fire Department is located in Nassau County on Long Island, directly North of Long Beach. Island Park lost three of their five pieces of apparatus during the storm. At the peak of the flooding, members of Island Park retreated to the second floor of the firehouse and watched out of the windows as their personal cars floated down the street.

The deployment is part of a Statewide Mobilization Plan that utilizies apparatus and manpower from areas not affected by the storm and relocates them to areas that were. Units usually remain on scene for 72 hours providing round the clock coverage.

The Hudson Fire Department wishes a safe trip to our fellow members helping in Long Island, and our thoughts go out to all those affected by the storm.
