On Saturday February 28th, 2015 the City of Hudson Fire Department was dispatched to a possible porch fire in the rear of 336 State Street.
Chief James Schermerhorn, on an unrelated call just a couple blocks away, arrived within seconds and reported a working structure fire. Mutual aid was request from Greenport and Catskill immediately. The fire had rapidly spread within minutes to 338 State Street. Engine 30 and Engine 28 both went to work on fire suppression as the crew from Tower32 went to the roof to ventilate. Crews inside were met with a rapidly spreading fire that consumed the attic of 338 State and began spreading into the 2nd floor.
After several long, cold hours, the fire was contained to the rear of 336 State and the 2nd floor and attic of 338 State Street. Crews faced tough conditions as temperatures dropped to 3 degrees during the night. Gear and equipment froze solid within minutes of exposure.
The City of Hudson Fire Department was assisted on scene by the Catskill, Athens, Greenport, and Stottville Fire Departments. Crews from Claverack, Stottville, and Greenport stood by at Hudson Central Station.
Also on scene assisting was the City of Hudson Police Department, City of Hudson Department of Public Works, Columbia County Fire Coordinators Office, National Grid, The American Red Cross, and AnimalKind.
The fire is still under investigation by the Hudson Police Department.
Almost two dozen residents were displaced by the fire. No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced families. |
