At 14:09 hours Hudson Fire was toned out for a possible fire on the roof of 451 East Allen Street. This area of the city is well know for its large and very old grand residences, many of which have been renovated into single family residences or offices.

Upon arrival Assistant Chief Shawn Hoffman reported a working fire in the attic and roof of the address. Assistant Chief Anthony DeMarco Jr. arrived and established a command post and ordered Catskill to the Scene with Tower Ladder 3-15, and Greenport with Rescue M-25 as the FAST truck.

Engine 30 and Tower Ladder 32 arrived simultaneously and immediately went to work. Engine 30 stretched two 2 inch attack lines into the building. They encountered heavy smoke conditions pushing down from the attic to the second floor and began and assent to attack the fire. Tower 32 positioned and went to work on the roof, pulling apart burning sections and making conditions more tenable for the interior crews.

Engine 28 completed a reverse lay from Engine 30 with 900 feet of five inch supply line to a larger water main in front of the Columbia County Courthouse. Engine 27-9 assisted with interior operations and re-supply of air.

Interior members entering the fire room with heavy smoke became entangled in clotheslines which were hung from the roof joists. The members were able to quickly rely on their training and free themselves uninjured and without the need to activate the FAST team. Visible fire was knocked down and extensive overhaul commenced. It was found the area of the fire was tightly packed with boxes and other items which all had to be removed to completely extinguish the fire.

Tower 32 ultimately had to remove portions of the several layers of roof to extinguish seated pockets of fire with a 2 inch hose line.

The Greenport Rescue Squad was one the scene conducting physical checks and rehabilitation services for firefighters.

The cause of the blaze was attributed to use of a heat gun used to strip paint from the structure up to one hour before the blaze was discovered.

As operations were concluding Greenport Engine 24-1, Stottville Engine 50-1 and Tower Ladder L-50 along with Engine 28 took in an alarm activation at the Hudson City Centre at State and Green St.
