On Sunday October 10, 2021 at approximately 4pm Hudson Fire and Greenport Rescue were dispatched for a boat with 4 occupants rapidly taking on water on the Hudson River just south of the Hudson Athens Lighthouse.
While enroute Chief Anthony DeMarco Jr. additionally requested the Athens Fire Department to respond with their Marine Unit.
HFD members responded with the Marine Unit and Dive Team and deployed on the river.
The HFD, Athens FD, and the Greenport Rescue Marine Units arrived to find the back half of the occupied vessel partially submerged in the water. The occupants were brought aboard the Hudson and Athens Marine units and brought to dry land at the Hudson Boat Launch.
This is the second river rescue for the Hudson Fire Department in 4 months. On June 27th HFD rescued two kayakers who had capsized in rough waters on the river.
This incident highlights the joint water response relationship between the Hudson and Athens Fire Departments. Both agencies train and respond together as a unified marine unit and dive team. The response today exemplifies the benefits of this venture.
